In May 2002 a national study on the risks and benefits of Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) for women was abandoned after the initial results showed a significantly increased risk of significant health problems in the participants.
The initial results of the study, which included approximately 16,000 women between the ages of 50 and 79, revealed that women using Prempro had a significantly higher risk of developing breast cancer, strokes, cardiovascular disease and blood clots.
On May 28, 2003, the Wall Street Journal reported that a new study revealed that "Prempro doubled the risk of dementia in women over 65."
